peschici AND ITS SURROUNDINGS
Peschici is a municipality belonging to the National Parc of Gargano. Well known sea resort it has been awarded for more than a couple of years with the Blue Flag, because of the good quality of its water. The small, white-washed town is located on the top and along the slopes of an imposing chalky cliff (100 m height) overlooking a beautiful bay.
VIESTE
Vieste is a small town on the most eastern part on the Gargano promontory, delimited by long and sandy beaches. In the even part there are the most recent buildings of the 19. century and more modern times. Up the cliff there is the medieval town center, where we find along its narrow winding streets those houses with the typical external staircases (mignali), sometimes hold together by peculiar arcades.
S. GIOVANNI ROTONDO
The town became world famous for the pilgrimages made there to honour Padre Pio da Pietrelcina, a stigmatic, of the convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie. The hospital was built for the relief of sick pilgrims also thanks to the money gifts of numerous devote people.
NATIONAL PARK OF GARGANO
It has become one of Italy’s National Natural Reserves. From a biological point of view, the Gargano promontory is actually an island. It is rich in chalk structures like caves and dolines. While in the past the promontory was entirely covered by forests, nowadays they represent only 15 percent of its original surface: the most important wood in the Park is the Foresta Umbra.
